det ar grymt i norr is a compilation of exclusive tracks by artists reflecting the contemporary swedish underground electronic music scene: alvar, celldod, dissocio modus trans, hjarnkultur, agent side grinder, kinder aus asbest, aemit and yabibo hazurfa (special scandinavian letters not included). the title of the compilation, swedish for it s grim up north describes the atmosphere perfectly - in swedish, grymt also means cool. the gloomy cover was designed by erik soderberg. subtitled swedish synthetic darkness, the music on the album is intense, hard and cold at first listen but boiling with emotions underneath the surface. expect industrial, ebm, coldwave, acid and everything on the spectrum between electro and ambient. thank you for the music.

simbad teams up with south african vocalist brian temba, whose previous release together come join in dropped on hi:rise back in 2011. in it’s original form take my hand is a sublime, forward-looking deep and soulful house track based around a filtering symphonic string loop, low-slung groove and heart-felt vocal. simbad has created a very london-centric vibe but with a french touch and detroit sensibilities, drawing from house heroes such as parrish and bradock, joining the dots and creating a fresh masterpiece in the process. next up we have jimpster on the remix, picking up the bpm’s slightly and loading up on his trademark deep stabs, sub-bass and spacious fx adding just enough dance-floor bump whilst leaving the vocal placed firmly at the core. on the flip side we have two smbd zulu edits which replace the more spartan groove of the original with some driving afro percussion. the first version keeps the vocal intact, the second version goes balls deep into dub territory, closing out this amazing release with an instrumental pushing the strings and hypnotic groove front and centre

making his return to the label after last year s springtime favorite, everlast, is dorsi plantar. better listen s twelfth entry in the main run marks their first repeat of an artist, and the copenhagen man does not disappoint. tack farsan is a balanced sample-driven ep intended to milk the last of summer s flavors for the dancefloors enjoyment. the top side hosts sunny disco affairs in the release s title track, and a polished collab with label mate sune. the logo side, on the other hand, explodes into deep latin affairs.

marc & oveous bring the classic bruk flavours to atjazz’s label with their new e.p. ‘on again’. the original harks back to the old co-op nights with a tough bass synth and oveous’ soul laden vocals, tied together behind a punchy, syncopated broken beat rhythm. dress to sweat, this one will make the bodies move. first up on the flip side the ‘4x4 dub’ switches the rhythm to a straight up 4x4 house beat, but that subby synth carries through the broken beat touch. the original mixes’ vocals are dropped in favour of one of oveous’ short spoken word monologues before he steps back to let the music do the magic. the ‘dubstramental’ gives you one final interpretation utilising the same dubbed out template as the b1, but reverting back to the original broken beat pattern to give you three different flavours to throw down with.

here it is, the first in a new mini-series from icelandic label borg ltd - homegrown ep vol. 1 marks the label s maiden voyage onto showcasing the local icelandic talent with a three-track release featuring ilo, intr0beatz and felix leifur. the a side is completely owned up by ilo s seventeen minute house-disco journey only someone real complete with a 90 s tinged rave sequence at the tail end. on the b side intr0beatz supplies fu banco, a heady slowed down house groover that keeps his signature sound and atmosphere intact. felix leifur follows with transit, shaping together in his genre bending way the dusty chords, heavily effected samples, tape hiss and other involuntary recording equipment noises into a beautiful coherency fit for both home & club duty. a great first in borg ltd s homegrown series!

kicking off the first of two tracks by sondrio night train is smooth and subtle, this melodic low slung groover is made for those warm summer days. the deep tones give the low end just enough attitude to get those boots knocking. give it like is punchy and upbeat, sondrio gives you a dance floor weapon that ll have the punters up in arms. his signature low end notes drive this record with vocal stabs that will fit in any set. first up on b side ant larock drops another groovy house number better think with a mesmerising vocal laid on top of nothing but luscious chords. summer needs records like this, it s what memories are made of. ant also delivers pleasure that feels like a good dj tool perfect to break up those disco vocals with choppy chords, swinging drums and a cheeky vocal to match. house music at its finest.

for our second release of 2018 ears have eyes are back with the third instalment of our throng of orbs compilation series. this time around we welcome back old friends, and bring in some new names to the ehe fold, with a collection of tracks spanning deep emotive house music, broken beats and acid dancefloor pressure. first up we have contours, who burst onto the scene in 2015 with an excellent release on the mighty rhythm section, and has put out a slew of great records since then. dither takes time to unfold, but when the fluid acid line emerges from the heady percussion he really sets up the track for dancefloor perfection. for the a2 we welcome back chocky to the label, and he serves up a slice of weighty house music that drips quality and emotion. pickle dat kicks off with an absolute beauty of a groove, understated but weighty, and from there chocky goes on to sprinkle just the right amount of seasoning, with soulful rhodes licks and a wonderful bass line. off the back of their excellent 12- on love on the rocks, elles x violet kick off the b side with yrnyb, a tried and tested dancefloor destroyer. when we heard elles playing this in a dark basement in peckham, we just had to sign it. sometimes a kick drum, an acid line and a half heard vocal is all you need. finishing off the release we have dublin artist replete serving up a lovely slice of hazy, percussive house music that slowly builds to a crescendo. an acidic bassline sits nicely over congas and a warm, rounded kick drum.

introducing the fifth release on southern lights, dedicated to releasing hypnotic techno and electronic sounds. alpi is the production duo of gabriel pivaro and daniele alessi. together they present the ‘cerulean flow’ ep, a journey into introspective techno and resonant soundscapes. the a-side features ‘end of matter’, exploring more contemplative structures while the ground loop remix provides both a dark and buoyant interpretation of the original. on the b-side, ‘hidden river’ is opaque, dynamic techno, complete with heavy kicks and calculated pads. ‘chant’ is an ambient passage that completes the introspective journey of the cerulean flow ep.

victor simonelli opens up the vaults once more to unlock groove committee s dirty games , the follow up to the seminal i want you to know . taking the blueprint from his timeless house classic, simonelli reworked the bassline for this 92 follow up whilst holding onto that sublimely simple yet powerful chord progression, one that never fails to put a smile on the face. add in a helping of swung hats and crunched up shakers and this is a classic by anyone s standards. the vocals - a charged up, evocative warning to a mistreating lover - fit the nyc garage house rhythm so perfectly and deliver a raw emotion to the track. next up the dubb mix kicks off with the accapella vocals laid bare in all their glory, before that piano progression lays the path for the full force of dirty games to make its impact. there s more space between the vocals in this dub mix, allowing simonelli s production prowess room to breathe. a surefire spine tingler from start to finish. on the b side, simonelli offers up his 1993 re-edit, extending, elongating and beefing up certain elements to captivate audiences all over again. closing out the e.p. is groove committee s 93 track i wana hold you produced in collaboration with glenn sweety g toby - it follows that same garage house shuffling rhythm, with soul-laden organs and paula brion s killer vocals. another much welcomed reissue of some of victor simonelli s most sought after tracks, remastered by the man himself for a new generation of listeners.

perc trax slips out its first cheeky white label in over two years, pulling together two secret weapons from perc’s sets this year. first off perc trax newcomer tymon rips into perc’s own “hyperlink” giving it a shot of adrenalin which has been eating festivals alive all summer.

as a creative tool, the theremin - bizarre, unique, and rarely heard - can be expressive, intuitive and highly adaptable. in hekla’s hands, her instrument covers an enormous range, from skittering birdsong of high frequency chirrups and chirps, to grinding, tectonic sub-bass. we are given the throbbing, apocalyptic dread of muddle and the baroque beauty of traditional icelandic hymn “heyr himna smi&#8706,,ur” in sequential tracks on the album’s a-side. appropriately, she also writes that the album title - Á - is similarly multifaceted in her native icelandic: “a river is an á and also it means ouch like when you hurt yourself, and also when you put something on top of something you put it á (on) something.”

neck-snapping soul masterpiece from freddie scott, famously sampled by biz markie for his melancholic pop-rap hit “just a friend” and a surefire piano-driven basement party anthem in its own right. the work of the legendary producers gamble & huff, the track was also sampled by ghostface killah for the wonderful “save me dear” with jay dilla also utilising the crunching drums to lace many memorable productions for a tribe called quest and slum village. a peerless piece of deep soul and hip-hop history, here’s your chance to own the first ever officially licensed reissue on 45. on the flip, “powerful love” is uptempo guitar-soul with finger-popping swing. featuring delicate horns and gorgeous backing vocals, it’s an unfairly slept-on gem but, given the weight of the a-side, this is perfectly understandable. this special 7&#8243,, single comes housed in a heavy duty custom printed full-colour company sleeve and is limited to just 500 copies.

flevans returns with a killer 45 for the funky dancefloor! leading the way is “who’s got me” - an up tempo disco/boogie cut with more slap bass than a clone army of larry grahams… it’s a tasty dancefloor number with a big top line from none other than laura vane (mj cole, gnarls barkley, laura vane and the vipertones) who absolutely owns the vocal duties as anyone who is familiar with her work would expect. oooh weee!
